Mamata makes Goenka, Dhanuka sing

Sanjiv Goenka and CK Dhanuka were persuaded by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to sing at the inauguration of the second edition of ‘Bengal Leads’ industry meet at Haldia, near here, on Tuesday. Goenka, chairman of R P Sanjiv Goenka group, and Dhanuka, chairman of Dhunseri group, thereafter took up the microphone to sing ‘Aae meri pyare vatan’ with the former humming from behind.

They were soon joined by Trinamool MP Sudip Bandopadhyay and everybody on the dais including the chief minister, singing Rabindra sangeet ‘Jodi keu tor dak sune naa aashe, tobe ekla chole re’. The inauguration speech ended with the national anthem with everybody present joining in.

Dhanuka had displayed his ability with the violin before the chief minister during the inauguration of Dhunseri’s plant expansion programme at Haldia a few months ago.

The CM also blamed the opposition and a section of the media for negating industrial growth during the 21-month TMC rule in the state. ‘Who said we are not for big industry? It is only a section of the media who are running a false propaganda to pursue their selfish interests,’ she said.

The CM said one section of the media is comparing Bengal with Gujarat. ‘I am happy for that as Gujarat is a lovable state but the two states are not comparable.’ While Gujarat has 17 ports, Bengal has only two which had not been properly dredged by the Centre. Besides, the population density in Bengal is higher than Gujarat, which also has 1.5 per cent more land.

‘On the top of that, there is no road blockade and political obstruction by the opposition in Gujarat, unlike in Bengal’, she said.
