To rein in soaring prices, the West Bengal government on Tuesday decided to sell onions through mobile fair-priced shops besides undertaking additional cultivation to improve supply.
With retail prices shooting beyond Rs 60 per kg in the city, onions will be sold from Wednesday along with ginger in six markets in Kolkata.
‘Along with selling them, we have also undertaken additional monsoon cultivation of onion to improve the supply by Durga puja,’ Pradip Majumdar, adviser to the chief minister on agriculture and allied sectors, said.
