What can be seen as a generous and pro-active gesture on part of the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee extended to the Ministry of Tourism is the grant of land, for the establishment of one of the auxiliary branches of National Culinary Institute.
In an attempt to expand the hospitality education sector, the Ministry will be setting up the National Culinary Institute head-quartered in Tirupati, with auxiliary branches in Kolkata, Panchkula and Noida. ‘The land has been handed over generously for work to begin for the institute in Salt Lake City, in Kolkata. The land has also been handed over in Tirupati, for which work will begin shortly,’ said a ministry official.
‘We got an overwhelming response when we approached the West Bengal government with this idea, and they took action immediately and granted us land to start work from initially. In Tirupati we have been given 18 acres of land and recently for which we got clearance. But when it comes to West Bengal, they were every cooperative and the officials from the government heard out our plans for opening a National Culinary Institute especially in the state. They have given us two floors in Salt Lake City to start off with initially,’ said a highly placed source in the Ministry.
As per sources in the ministry the work will be completed in the coming next 6-8 months. There will be special herbal plants grown in Tirupati which will be used in the institute, viewing the success, this model will be followed in others institutes as well. Clearance from Uttar Pradesh government for land in Noida is still awaited.
Besides this mammoth project in mind, the ministry also has plans upgrade the existing National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology institutes. Tourism minister K Chiranjeevi plans to set-up the Indian Culinary Institute along the lines of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), keeping in mind the Indian aspect while doing so.
