Mamata flays Una violence, demands protection for Dalits

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday condemned the thrashing of Dalit youth in Gujarat’s Una town and demanded the Centre to ensure protection to Dalits in the country.

“The incident in Una is an organised crime against Dalits. I urge the Central government to give protection to Dalits.This is unacceptable. The TMC has also raised the issue in Parliament,” she said in a tweet.

Raising the issue on the on the floor of the house on Wednesday, the party’s leader in the Rajya Sabha Derek O’Brien said: “This is an organised crime against Dalits. We must suspend all business and take up a discussion on the issue.”

Other parties, including the BSP, have also demanded a discussion on the crimes against Dalits, leading to the adjournment of the House.

Gujarat’s Saurashtra has been on the boil for the last few days, where seven Dalit youth were beaten up for allegedly skinning a dead cow by a vigilante cow protection group in Una.
