Mamata defends Delhi CM over turf war with Centre

In the midst of a turf war between the Centre and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday extended support to the Aam Aadmi Party leader and his government , saying that too much interference in the federal structure is “unacceptable”.  The West Bengal Chief Minister has also pitched for elected institutions respecting each other and remaining within their jurisdictions.

On Monday, Banerjee decided to put across her view and tweeted, “Too much interference in the federal structure is unacceptable. The state government is an elected body. <g data-gr-id="30">Central</g> government is also an elected body. Every elected body has its own jurisdiction. One must respect the other.”

Banerjee’s statement through social media came, when Kejriwal who is also the founder of the AAP refused to accept Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung’s orders on officers’ appointments, and has decided to fight for a full statehood for the national Capital. They also alleged the NDA government is trying to rule Delhi through the Jung, who is a representative of the Centre in the capital.

This is not the first <g data-gr-id="32">time,</g> when Banerjee extended has support to Kejriwal. On April 30, in a significant political development, Kejriwal had called her up to congratulate for the massive victory in the state municipal elections.

Earlier, when AAP swept the Delhi Assembly elections, Banerjee had called up Kejriwal and wished him. Then, it was Banerjee who had asked people to vote in favour of AAP.

Since then AAP founder was looking for an opportunity to interact with Banerjee and soon after the municipal results came, Kejriwal called up to wish her.

She is expected to meet the Delhi CM during her next visit to the national Capital to discuss various issues, including the contentious Land Bill. Also, Kejriwal is expected to seek help from her for more power when it’s comes to handling Delhi Police.

Delhi Police is under the Union Home Ministry, which became a problem for the Kejriwal government. Knowing, the fact that Derek O’Brien and TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar are members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home affairs, Kejriwal’s meeting with Banerjee could help him with the concerns related to Home Ministry.

SC asks WB govt to complete reconstitution of civic bodies
West Bengal Govt was on Monday asked by the SC to complete by June 30 the exercise to reconstitute seven municipal bodies to enable the state election commission to hold elections there. A vacation bench comprising Justices AK Sikri and <g data-gr-id="55">U U</g> Lalit said the election process would involve demarcation of constituencies, including the reserved constituencies. The bench, which was hearing the petition by the state government for postponing the elections to complete the formalities for reconstituting the municipal bodies, modified the Calcutta HC May 15 order which had directed completion of the polls within two months.
