'Mamata can be Prime Minister in 2014'

The Trinamool Congress's Lok Sabha leader Sudip Bandopadhyay said on Monday after attending the lunch meeting organised by Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi that Mamata Banerjee has all the qualities of being a Prime Minister and that the Trinamool Congress has the capability to fight it alone in 2014 Parliamentary elections.

'We have not taken a decision in the matter . But if required we can fight the 2014 polls on our own', Bandopadhyay said. Bandopdhyay said that the TMC has 42 MPs–fuelling speculation that the TMC could be backed by either the Congress or the NDA in such a political scenario.

Bandopadhyay's remark comes in the wake of Mamata Banerjee's clear message at the Martyr's Day rally on 21 July - fight the panchayat elections alone. 'Get closer to the people. We are going it alone in the panchayat polls. Also expect the panchayat polls after the pujas which is in October', she told lakhs of TMC supporters at the rally. Though Mamata had struck an alliance with the Congress for the Assembly polls in Bengal 2011 as well the Parliamentary polls in 2009, it is no secret that the relations have come under a cloud over issues like supporting Pranab Mukherjee's candidature for presidential candidate or securing a moratorium on the state's interest on loans made by the CPIM Government that preceded Mamata's Government.

However, it was expected that Banerjee's party will back UPA's Vice Presidential candidate Hamid Ansari, indicated Banerjee.
