With the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee all geared to rub shoulders with the aam aadmi at Jantar Mantar on Monday, political cauldron in the national capital is once again on the boil. The Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee arrived in Delhi on Sunday, and made the intent of her mission in the national capital clear through the message uploaded on Facebook.
This is the first time in that a serving chief minister has chosen to protest at Jantar Mantar in support of her demands. After withdrawing support from the United Progressive Alliance [UPA], Banerjee has taken her protest to the streets. Her Jantar Mantar dharna on 1 October to protest against foreign direct investment in retail, hike in diesel prices and also the government's decision to cap the number of subsidised LPG cylinders follows similar public protest in Kolkata.
The Congress-led centre and also other political parties will be closely watching the show, which Banerjee will put up in the heart of the national capital. The Trinamool Congress had not participated in the Bharat Bandh call given by the opposition on 20 September on the same issue. The Trinamool protest will begin from 11 am and Banerjee will be flanked by leaders from her party. Since she has an MP and a few MLAs in north India, Banerjee may mobilise good crowd at Jantar Mantar, said a source.
Trinamool, the largest ally of the Congress till recently, which leads the UPA government, had withdrawn its ministers and support after the government refused to roll back economic reforms measures despite Banerjee setting a 72-hour deadline. On Saturday, Banerjee, while attacking the government, said, 'Reforms are meant to usher development for the people. Nowadays, the trend is whenever any anti-people decision is taken, it is taken in the name of reforms. In the name of reforms and aam admi, loot cholchhe, loot…'
