West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday highlighted the need for new generation of leaders to take over the political mantle. ‘It is my earnest dream and belief that Trinamool Congress will emerge as the ideal political alternative for India. We will not live forever. The youth has to take over from us. We have to create a new generation of leaders’, she said.
Mamata was addressing a rally Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the students’ wing of the party.
Underlining her disappointment with the new BJP government at the Centre, she said, ‘Nothing has changed after the change of government at the centre. The centre is taking away our revenues for debt installment repayment. If the centre did not take our revenues away, we could have generated jobs for lakhs of people’.
She also spoke about the polarization of people. ‘Some people are trying to incite riots in Bengal. Some people are trying to instigate violence. Some people are trying to drive a wedge between Hindus and Muslims. Some people will keep doing malicious propaganda against us. We will keep doing our work for the people. We must stick to our ideals. We must have confidence in ourselves and keep our heads high. Students and youths are our strengths’, she explained.
Explaining her government’s achievements, Banerjee said, ‘There were only 38 colleges in Bengal till 2011. We have set up 31 colleges in last 3 years. During Left Front rule, only 1 university was formed. We set up 8 new universities in 3 years. We have started the Kanyashree scheme for girls.
We have also started Sikkhashree scheme for SC/ST students. We have started Yuvashree scheme
for unemployed youth. One lakh people are registered in employment bank.’
