Mamata announces new schemes for women, youth

After her party’s win in the panchayat polls, the West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee announced welfare schemes for women, while addressing a rally at Sarisha in South 24 Parganas on Wednesday.

‘We are bringing the `Mahakaran’ to the districts. Even if you cannot reach us, we will reach you. This is a small but very important initiative to make the common people aware of the various schemes the government is launching for their benefit and betterment. I will visit 9 districts before Durga Puja and the rest will be completed after the Pujas', said Banerjee.

Banerjee said that the scheme ‘Kanyashree’ will be implemented from 1 October 1 this year. At least 10,000 girls, who are 18 years and above and still continuing their higher education, will receive Rs. 25,000 each. Girls between the ages of 13 and 17, who are enrolled in any educational institution will get Rs 500 each as scholarship.

‘We have created employment banks and 1 lakh unemployed youth will be given Rs 1500. This will start from October 3. Everyone must enroll to get jobs’, she explained.

She also announced the All Womens University, which is being established in the Diamond Harbour. The academic sessions will begin from next year. ‘Four new universities in the state will come up whereas the previous government had managed to build one new varsity in 34 years’ she said.

‘Our fair price medicine shop models are being replicated all over the country. We have introduced the concept so that the poor people can avail medical services at lower costs. Also, five multi-super hospitals have been started in the district’, she reiterated.
