Malleswaram blast: Police identify prime suspect

The 17 April Malleswaram blast was executed reportedly by Panna Ismail, the prime accused in the 1998 Coimbatore blast case, according to police.

This fact was revealed in the ‘brief status report’ submitted by H M Omkaraiah, assistant commissioner of police and investigating officer, to the Karnataka high court on Tuesday in a habeas corpus case. The report outlined the progress and findings of the investigation into the blast.

The status report said Panna Ismail ‘is reported to have come to the place of (the) incident before the bomb blast and is also strongly suspected of carrying out the blast’.

Investigators have identified the motorcycle used in the blast as a blue Suzuki Max model bearing the registration number TN-22-R 3729. ‘Immediately, a team was deputed to Tamil Nadu to trace the owner of the motorcycle... Enquiries revealed that on 15 April, two persons, Anwar Pasha and M Raza, had purchased this vehicle from one Gopi, an auto consultant of Vellore town, for Rs 7,300. While purchasing the motorcycle, they gave their mobile number as 7708484043,’ the report said.Further enquires revealed that the said mobile number belonged to one Maheshwaran Pillai and was used by his son Rajesh Nayar of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu.

Nair lost his mobile phone with the SIM card on 12 February, 2013. This stolen mobile with the SIM card was obtained by Wahid of Melupalyam and passed on to Basheer, who is currently under police custody.

‘Basheer revealed during interrogation that he had knowledge about the SIM card which was stolen/lost from the possession of Rajesh Nayar.... He admitted that he had handed over the same to Panna Ismail, and the same was used to facilitate the bomb blast in Bangalore,’ the police told the court.
