Maldivian announces direct flights to India

Maldivian, the national carrier of the Maldives, announced the launch of its direct services from Mumbai, Chennai and Dhaka to the country’s capital Male. The airline will be operating three flights weekly to Chennai, Dhaka [Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday] and to Mumbai [Wednesday, Friday and Sunday], according to Abdul Harris, MD, Maldivian.

To cater to the new direct routes, the airline is adding a 154-seat Airbus 320 aircraft by October 2012 to its existing fleet comprising two Dash 8-200 [37 seats] series and three Dash8-300 [50 seats] series aircraft, Harris said, while describing this launch as a major step for the carrier after beginning operations 12 years ago and its first international flight to Trivandrum In January 2007. He said Maldivian flights to Chennai will cater to various markets like the medical segment including working with Apollo Hospitals, Chennai to promote medical tourism from both Maldives and Bangladesh.
