A Malaysia Airlines jet from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo was forced to turn back because of cabin pressure problems, in the latest setback for the troubled carrier.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH70, a Boeing 777-20 jet, made the U-turn roughly an hour into its journey on Saturday.
‘It was not able to maintain the right pressure differential for the comfort of the passengers,’ said Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the head of Malaysia’s civil aviation department. ‘It is not a major problem,’ he added. The passengers were transferred to another flight and departed a few hours later.
Malaysia Airlines has had a terrible year, losing both MH370, which disappeared on its way to Beijing and MH17, which was shot down over Ukraine. A total of 537 passengers were lost.
In the wake of the two major disasters, Malaysia Airlines is now set to be re-nationalised and completely overhauled. The state investor, Khazanah Nasional, has said it is even considering a name change to detoxify the company.
