The blaze erupted on one of the top floors in the commercial-cum residential building near Regal Cinema around 4 pm, said officials of the Bombay Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster control department. The building houses the famous Cafe Mondegar and a McDonald’s outlet.
However, no casualty has been reported as occupants were quickly evacuated, they added. Ten fire-tenders were pressed into service. Personnel from nearby police stations were also rushed to the spot. The Navy has sent four fire engines with specialised fire-fighting equipment, its PRO Captain DK Sharma said. The Naval dockyard in Mumbai is about half a km away from the site of the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
