Major fire at Kolkata New Secretariat; govt probing sabotage

A massive fire broke out at the New Secretariat building in the central business district on Friday morning. A total of 23 fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the inferno. However, no casualty has been reported.

The government has constituted a special team to probe the incident from sabotage angle. “The fire broke out around 10am and raged for over three hours,” an official said.

According to primary reports, the fire broke out at the office of state Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee, located on the seventh floor of the building. Important documents of the state government departments have reportedly been destroyed in the blaze.

After the fire was brought under control, a team comprising forensic experts from the Kolkata Police rushed to the spot to probe the incident. This is the second important state government office, after the Writers’ Buildings in the state. The building houses a number of state government offices, including Panchayat, Public Health (PHE) Department, Public Works Department (PWD), Transport and several other departments.

A month ago, state Fire Services Minister Javed Khan had asked the fire services department to refurbish outdated fire extinguishing equipment at all government offices, including at the New Secretariat and the Calcutta HC. The police are finding out if the fire extinguishing equipments installed in the building are outdated.
