Main accused held in Karawal Nagar twin murder case

Delhi Police have arrested the main accused in connection with the twin murders at Karawal Nagar in northeast Delhi on 14 August.

The accused has been identified as Mazhar (23), who is allegedly the kingpin of a burglars’ gang. He was recently released from jail and was not available at his residence on the day of incident.

An 18-year-old girl and her 9-year-old brother were found dead in a room on the first floor of their residence at Shahid Bagat Singh Colony in Karawal Nagar on 14 August. To establish the identity of the accused, an exhaustive list of criminals which included sexual offenders, robbers, burglars and other criminals was prepared. Each one of them was questioned by the police.

It was later learnt that Mazhar’s gang might be involved in the crime. On Wednesday, the police received a tip-off that Mazhar would come to meet one of his associate near Wazirabad bus stand. A trap was laid to nab him. At the time of his arrest, the mobile phone of deceased girl was also recovered from his him. Mazhar revealed that he, along with his associate Sunny had committed the crime. He also confessed to have raped the girl. ‘They scaled the wall of a house they had identified for robbery but found it locked. Further, in a bid to commit burglary, they jumped into the adjacent house. There, they found a girl and boy sleeping inside the house’, a policeman said quoting Mazhar’s statement.

When they woke up on hearing the sound, they hit the girl and her brother on head. ‘Mazhar then sexually assaulted the girl and took away her mobile and Rs 1,200 from her purse. Later, the duo killed the siblings and fled,’ said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner of police (Crime Branch) said.

‘A man-hunt is on to nab the absconding accused,’ he added. Manzhar, a history-sheeter is a school drop-out who has been involved in nine cases of robbery and arms act. All the cases have been registered at Karwala Nagar police station.
