Mail Today prints forged Shanti Bhushan column

Former law minister and a founding member of the Aam Aadmi Party Shanti Bhushan has disowned the article published in English daily tabloid Mail Today titled ‘Kejriwal is on course to ruin 2014 for the BJP’. After the veteran lawyer said that the article was not written by him, the media house immediately offered an apology. Two FIRs have been lodged at New Delhi’s Connaught Place police station relating to forgery and defamation in the matter.

While Bhushan called the article forged and registered his complaint demanding immediate action against the conspirator who wrote it and sent it to the organisation, the media house made a verbal apology and promised Bhushan to publish the regret note in their
next edition.

Bhushan called the forged article a part of big political conspiracy to discredit AAP and Arvind Kejriwal. ‘It is possible that a BJP member could be behind it,’ Bhushan said. The FIR filed by Bhushan, in possession of Millennium Post, reads: ‘The article was neither written by me nor sent by me to the media house. The views in the article are also completely contrary to my view. The newspaper in question did not check with me to verify whether the article was actually written or sent by me, before publishing the article with my name and photograph.’

Speaking to Millennium Post, a senior editorial staff from Mail Today requesting anonymity said, ‘We have filed an FIR even before Bhushan lodged his complaint.’ However, SBS Tyagi, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi) said, ‘Till late Friday evening, we have only received one complaint and that is from Bhushan. The media house has not approached us.’
The tabloid claims they received an e-mail regarding the article in which the content was attached. ‘We have carried the article, given credit to Bhushan and carried his photograph,’ the senior editorial staff added. ‘We believe someone has tried to defame us and Bhushan for their own benefits. There was no malice or mala fide intention from our side in publishing the article.’

‘We have been duped by miscreants with a motive and sincerely apologise to Mr Shanti Bhushan for carrying what was purportedly his article,’ Mail Today editor Sandeep
Bamzai tweeted.
