Honouring the outstanding services rendered by individuals and institutions in the field of welfare of senior citizens, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment conferred Vayoshreshtha Samman 2014 to seven people on Wednesday.
Speaking at the award ceremony, union minister for social justice Thaawar Chand Gehlot said that it’s generally observed that in spite of the increase in number of older persons, the importance and utility of the senior citizens is not being recognised adequately by the society.
The union minister further added that in comparison to other parts of the world, the situation is not so alarming. Still, there has been a perceptible decline in respect of the social status and position of the senior citizens coupled with this, the physical and psychological effects of the ageing process make the elderly vulnerable to ailments.
Speaking on the occasion Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan stressed on the important role being playedby the elderly. Mahajan said there is need for more old-age homes, recreation clubs, doctors for the old persons as well as programmes where the nutritional needs of the old people could be addressed.
