The Centre has requested Maharashtra government to examine the feasibility of declaring ‘Mehrangir’, the iconic bungalow of Homi J Bhabha, father of India’s atomic energy programme, as a protected monument or heritage building.
This was stated by minister of State for Culture Shripad Naik in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.
He said state government has been requested ‘to examine the feasibility of declaring the property either as a protected monument under the State Archaeology Act or as a heritage building by the Mumbai Heritage Committee, keeping in view the historicity of the building and Art Deco Style of architecture’.
It may be recalled that ‘Mehrangir’, the iconic bungalow of Homi J Bhabha, father of India’s atomic energy programme, situated at Mumbai was sold at an auction for Rs 372 crore to a bidder whose identity was not disclosed, despite demands to turn it into a museum.
