To decongest traffic at Asia’s busiest road crossing – the ITO intersection – the Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi government has come up with a plan to build three flyovers and a skywalk for the safety of the pedestrians.
ITO, in addition to being the gateway to east Delhi across river Yamuna, is also home to some of the most important government offices including the Delhi Police headquarters, the central revenue building, the DDA headquarters and VAT Bhawan. ‘The presence of these offices with the press area in the neighbourhood, we witness a lot of pedestrian movement in the area. The pedestrian population increases whenever there is a fair at Pragati Maidan or a match at the Feroze Shah Kotla cricket ground,’ said PWD Minister Rajkumar Chauhan.
The Skywalk proposal has been conceptualised to allow safe pedestrian movement across several roads criss-crossing this intersection. According to PWD sources, ‘Skywalk proposal has been send to UTTIPEC (Unified Traffic & Transportation Infrastructure Center) for approval.’ The pedestrian traffic at the ITO intersection is expected to increase when the Central Secretariat-Lal Qila metro line is commissioned. The metro station is being built in front of the Press Area.
According to the proposal, ‘The Skywalk will connect different roads like Mathura Road, Tilak Marg (going towards India Gate) and Sikander Road (towards Mandi House) with Vikas Marg, on which the School of Planning and Architecture and the Police Headquarter are located.’ According to Chauhan, ‘These Skywalks would be ultra modern and pedestrian-friendly. A rotary will be made on a pillar, where from all skywalks will be connected.’
In addition to the skywalk, there is also the proposal to make three clover leaf flyover. These flyovers are being designed to make traffic signal-free at the intersection which witnesses movement at snail’s pace during the peak hours.
