Tainted Rajasthan Royals player Ajit Chandila was promised Rs. 30 lakh to predict the result of an IPL match, a bookie arrested by Delhi Police said on Tuesday. However, despite Chandila predicting the winner correctly, he got only Rs 2 lakh.
Bhupendra Singh Nagar, who was arrested from Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh in a late evening raid on Monday, made the revelations in police custody Tuesday. Two more bookies, Syed Ahmed and Sunil Saxena from Hyderabad, were also arrested.
According to police, Nagar is a security manager at a club in a prominent south Delhi hotel, which was frequented by the tainted Rajasthan Royals player. Nagar took the opportunity to build rapport with him. He came to know about Chandila’s involvement in spot fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. He was approached by another bookie, Vicky, who requested him to arrange a meeting with Chandila. Nagar took Vicky and two other bookie friends to Jaipur where they met Chandila in the second week of May.
'They asked Chandila about the result of the match between KKR (Kolkata Knigh Riders) and RCB (Royal Challengers Bangalore) that took place on 12 May and Chandila predicted KKR's win,' said a police official. He was promised Rs. 30 lakh if KKR won and was given an advance of Rs.2 lakh. KKR won the match but as it was a low-scoring match and KKR failed to get a good start, the bookies lost a lot of money in the initial sessions. As a result, they gave Rs.5 lakh to Vicky and Nagar as final payment to be paid to Chandila. But the two divided the money amongst themselves.
Meanwhile, Ankeet Chavan was denied bail for marriage on Tuesday. The tainted Rajasthan Royals player had sought bail to get married on 2 June. The plea was rejected by a Delhi court which sent co-accused S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila to judicial custody till 4 June in the IPL spot fixing case.
Rejecting Chavan’s plea, chief metropolitan magistrate Lokesh Kumar Sharma said: ‘Social sentiments have no place... I don’t deem it appropriate to admit him to regular or interim bail.’
Lawyer for Chavan, who is in judicial custody till 4 June, said his marriage date was close and he needed to attend the ceremonies.
Along with Sreesanth and Chandila, the court also sent two bookies Ashwini Aggarwal and Chandresh Patel to judicial custody till 4 June.
