Loot: Cash van driver flees with Rs 54 lakh

A 30-year-old cash van driver fled with Rs 54 lakh, while cash was being refilled in an ATM machine in the Karol Bagh area of central Delhi. The van and empty cash boxes have been recovered, but the driver remained absconding.

The incident took place on Wednesday at approximately 10.45 am, when a team from the cash replenishment agency, Cash Management Services (CMS), was busy in filling the Axis bank ATM in the Karol Bagh area. While they were working, the driver who has been identified as Sanjay, fled with the van carrying Rs 54 lakh.

'The driver, along with CMS employees F D Sharma, Amit Mishra and Kapil, had taken the van carrying Rs 1 crore to refill the ATMs. Their first stop was at Padam Singh Road, where the CMS employees withdrew Rs 46 lakh from the van to refill the machines. When the three CMS employees were inside the ATM kiosk and the shutter had been downed to allow them to work, Sanjay asked one one of the armed guards standing outside the ATM to help him take a U-turn,' a police official said.

'The guard asked him why he needs to take a U-turn, to which Sanjay replied that he doesn’t want to hold up traffic in the area and therefore wants to park the van in a manner that will not affect traffic movement on the road. The moment the guard became engaged in watching the road and giving him directions to turn the van, Sanjay fled in the opposite direction,' the official added.

A call was made to the police control room, mentioning the registration number of the van—DL 1 LP 3556. All the roads near the area were barricaded and patrolling was started on motorcycles and PCR vans. After half an hour, the van was seen parked near Regarpura area in central Delhi. However, a search of the van revealed empty cash boxes. A case under appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Karol Bagh police station against Sanjay. The accused had joined CMS in August. Residential proofs submitted by him at the time has been found to be fake.

'We are searching all possible hide-outs,' Alok Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (central) said.
