Look who is eagerly waiting for 12/12/12

While many are waiting for doomsday to happen on 21 December, there is also a long queue of expectant mothers outside the clinics of gynaecologists to deliver on 12 December which happens to be 12.12.12. The trend of having muhurat babies or planned caesarean section on special dates is again catching up in the city as the ‘auspicious’ day of 12 December 2012 approaches.

Over the last few years, dates with repetitive numbers all through the ‘DD-MM-YY’ format has become a craze, say doctors. Last year, 2011, it was 11-11-11 and ditto for the earlier years. Dr Kirti Khetan, senior gynaecologist at BLK hospital New Delhi said, ‘A patient’s request for planned caesarean section on a special date is respected if the delivery date is around that unique date. We don’t suggest caesarean for the pre-mature babies.’

‘Of course the patient has to be fit and free of any complication,’ she added saying, ‘besides date, it’s also a scheduled muhurat given by a pandit at which parents want their babies to arrive.’ According to consultant gynaecologist at Apollo hospital Dr Ranjana Sharma such requests are one too many. ‘Already, I have got two requests for 12-12-12, and maybe we’ll get more in the coming days,’ said Dr Anjali Aneja of Max hospital. ‘I do plan deliveries only when it’s possible,’ said the doctor.

Medical experts say while complying with requests for muhurat babies, no doctor risks the patient’s and the infant’s life. ‘It’s only if doctors find it as a fit case for C-section, do they give a commitment to the patient,’ added Dr Kirti. At BLK hospital, New Delhi, requests for the ‘all-12 babies’ have already started pouring in, said Dr Dinesh Kansal, senior gynecologist. ‘So far, we have got three requests for planned deliveries on this special day.’

However, the muhurat moment fad, say doctors, goes beyond the moment a baby is born. Nowadays, it has spilled onto other medical procedures.’At times, we get requests from patients wanting the surgical incision done on their body at a specific time,’ said Dr Kansal. ‘Unlike baby deliveries, all our surgeries are planned, none is an emergency,’ added Dr Kansal.

However, astrologers do not adduce much importance to the specific date. ‘Every date is auspicious for some and inauspicious for others and its measured from the date, time and place of their arrival in the world. Birth and death are pre-destined and it cannot be planned by humans,’ said astrologer Vijay Pathak Shastri.
