Lack of consensus within the select committee on Lokpal Bill has almost made it sure that the Bill will not be present in the monsoon session that is to begin from 8 August. Sources say that chairman of select committee on Lokpal, Satyabrata Chaturvedi, was keen on tabling the bill this session. However, members within the committee had said that they would put a dissent note if the committee gave its report in a hurry to Parliament.
This has almost made sure that the bill cannot be presented in the monsoon session. The committee was expected to give its report on the first day of the last week of the one month long session which will end on 7 September.
Chairman of the select committee Satyabrata Chautervedi said that the report can only be submitted once a consensus has been arrived and all parties have voiced their opinion on the bill.
'It has only been a month since we started the meeting and till now we have only held five to six meetings' said Chautervedi. The Congress leader said that the delay in submitting the report was not in his hand as there other members also whose views need to considered.
'The Lokpal bill has been stuck for so long. How can you expect a consensus to arrive so soon?' asked Chautervedi, when asked if the bill will be tabled this session.
The Lokpal bill was sent to the 15-member select committee of the Rajya Sabha on 21 May.
