Lokayukta to probe Maya corruption cases

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to give more powers to the Lokayukta and has entrusted the ombudsman to probe into the alleged scams of the previous Mayawati government.

To start with, the Lokayukta has been given authority to investigate into the alleged financial irregularities by the previous BSP government in the construction of memorials and parks in the memory of dalit icons in Lucknow and Noida.

The state government, in order to give powers to the Lokayukta has issued a notification under Section 18 of the UP Lokayukta Act on Wednesday night, official sources here said. After the amendment, UP Lokayukta Justice N K Mehrotra, will have the power not only to inquire against 'non-public' servants and private contractors involved in the financial irregularities in the construction of memorials but also take help from Economic Offences wing [EOW] of the state police in the probe.

The order has been passed after the High Court issued a notice on a Public Interest Litigation [PIL] seeking information from the government about action taken on the reported scams in construction of in the Dalit memorials. The Lokayukta office has also confirmed about the amendment and it is now making necessary preparation to start the probe on the alleged scams in memorials and parks. It was after the preliminary inquiry by vigilance department that the state government had asked the Ombudsman to probe into the alleged financial irregularities into the purchase and supply of pink sandstone used in construction of boundary walls of memorials and parks in Lucknow and Noida.

The UP Lokayukta, in turn, had asked the government to issue a notification and provide a specialised agency for inquiry into the alleged irregularities.

The notification under Section 18 is required to initiate inquiry against non-public servants. The government has asked the Lokayukta to probe into the involvement of government departments, officials and suppliers in the scam.
