In an embarrassing incident, around 10 police officials, including an SHO were injured and four police vehicles were damaged when they were allegedly attacked by agitated locals at outer Delhi’s Narela on Sunday night.
The locals alleged a sex-racket was thriving in the area, and its members were operating with police connivance.
All the injured cops were immediately taken to a nearby hospital. The station house officer (SHO) of Narela police station, Ghulam Shabbir, suffered a fracture during the clash.
The police had to call for reinforcement from nearby station to control the situation, informed a police officer. A case of rioting was registered against unknown persons and on Monday morning few persons were called to the police station for questioning. However, no arrests were made till Monday evening.
According to the police, around 9.35 pm on Sunday, somebody from Narela called up the police control room and reported about an alleged sex racket operating at Sector A10 in the locality. Police went to the spot immediately and came across two men and women in the said house.
“The four persons claimed they were known to each other and had gone there to meet. But the locals gathered outside the house said they were involved in unlawful activities and tried to attack them,” the officer added.
Police then asked the four persons to come to the police station for questioning. “Soon people started yelling that police was protecting the culprits and attacked the cops with sticks. By the time the four persons were escorted to a police vehicle, people from the crowd started hurling stones,” said the official.
The PCR vans and the police jeep were also vandalised by the agitated locals.
