License of 310 medical stores suspended in 2013 for illegal trade of medicines

In a shocking revelation of illegal trade of medicines in the city, the department of drug control of Delhi government has revealed that it cancelled the licenses of 310 medical stores in Delhi from March to December, 2013.

The number of medical stores, which faced cancellation of their licenses for violating norms, was 2930 for the last five years.

‘There are 17,953 registered medical stores in Delhi,’ replied KC Aggarwal, information officer of drug control department, in a reply to an RTI query. In 2012-13, the numbers of such shops were 524. The RTI activist RS Bansal, however claims that the actual number of medical stores in the city is manifold and they are engaged in illegal trade of medicines and some openly sell banned drugs and also restricted drugs, which can’t be sell without the medical prescription.

The department also revealed that 16 out of 121 samples of medicines examined by the department between April to December, 2013, failed safety norms. The department also suspended the licenses of 310 medical stores in the same period in the city for violating norms.
