‘The committee shall discuss and identify concrete mechanisms to enhance the safety and security of persons from the North-East living in Delhi. They will solicit opinions and views of the members from the North-East community living in Delhi to outline key issues,’ said a press statement from LG office.
‘The committee will put in place a system of regular interaction between the District administration, Delhi police and members of organisations from the North-East to discuss problem areas and to identify remedial measures,’ it added.
The committee has been mandated to work out institutional mechanisms to ensure that the grievances of persons from the North-East are attended to promptly and effectively.
The members of the committee include eminent advocates Upamanyu Hazarika, Sanjoy Hazarika, J Mavivio Woba and Binalekshmi Nepram. A representative each from North East MPs Forum and Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region will be nominated in the committee. Besides, the joint commissioner of police (Security), deputy commissioners of police in North, South and South West districts and deputy commissioners (district magistrates) of South West, North, South, and New Delhi will be members in the committee.
The committee has been entrusted to recommend sensitisation measures to be undertaken which will ensure mutual respect and peaceful coexistence between all communities and groups staying in Delhi.
The plight of North East Indians came to light when a teenager Nido Tania was beaten to death by some shopkeepers in the Lajpat Nagar area, which lead to massive protest by students of the region. The incidents of racial attacks on men and women from the North Eastern states have also alarmingly risen in the national capital city in recent times.
