Let Congress decide prez candidate: BJP

The BJP on Sunday said it will wait for the Congress to decide on its choice of presidential candidate before taking a stand on the issue but said the party was 'open to everything'.

BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said the Congress should consult other political parties after deciding its presidential candidate.

'Let the Congress decides its stand first and consult other political parties. Let them decide first and then we will decide our strategy,' the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar told a press conference here.

'It is too early to say anything on a future election. We are open to everything. When time comes, we will decide our strategy,' he said.

Modi said that the BJP would consult NDA alliance partners before deciding its stand on the issue.

He was asked whether the BJP would support Vice-President Hamid Ansari or Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the event of either of the two contesting the presidential election and whether it would support NCP leader P A Sangma who is trying to woo various political parties in his presidential bid.

Modi, who is the also the finance minister of Bihar, demanded that the UPA government roll back the recent petrol price hike, arguing it would hit the common man most.

'The Centre should roll back the steepest-ever hike in the petrol prices which would lead price rise. Not only the NDA and the Left but even partners of the UPA are protesting the hike. The Centre should consider,' he said.

He also warned that the Centre may soon hike the prices of diesel and cooking gas as well.

Modi said his government was ready to collaborate with the West Bengal government in 'any field'.

Citing the restoration of law and order as one of the major achievements of the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar since 2005, he said more than 60,000 criminals had been convicted by various courts. Death sentences were awarded to 133 of them and 11,000 awarded life imprisonment.

He claimed, 'People in Bihar are now free of any fear psychosis with the positive change in law and order as they can move around the streets freely even at night.'
