Left, right, centre join hands to oust DU vice-chancellor

Sitaram Yechury of CPI, Anand Kumar from AAP, DP Tripathi of NCP and BJP’s Udit Raj, are planning a joint march in the north campus on Wednesday for removal of VC.

‘Despite the University Grants Commission’s  adverse report which found the VC guilty in OBC funds diversion of over Rs100 crore, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) and UGC have maintained status quo,’ said Nandita Narain, president of Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA). She further added to highlight the issue of widespread ongoing corruption in the university, various political representatives of different parties will also join the protest.

‘The university should run on democratic grounds. The demands of teachers and students is just and appropriate measures should be taken to address the same,’ said DP Tripathi, General Secretary of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) .

A whistle blower’s march will held on Tuesday against VC in which the participants will blow whistle to gather attention of authorities. ‘We have long demanded the removal of VC on several grounds. The whistle blower’s march is an innovative action programme of teachers, students and university employees. It is designed to draw the attention of the Parliament, political parties, civil society and the public at large and to set things in right order in the university’, said Nandita Narain.

Another professor at the university, Saikat Ghosh said ‘The VC is shielding corrupt and criminal principals including SP Gupta of Kirori Mal College amongs others. The  large scale manipulations regarding appointments of teachers have also come to light. Also, the much sought-after School of Open Learning has been brought to the brink of destruction. Despite all his deeds, DU VC is still occupying the office. We want a democratic system and not a corrupt university.’

Sitaram Yechury, Anand Kumar and Udit Raj were not available for comments on the matter.
The controversial DU VC has been in the news ever since the inception of FYUP (four-year undergraduate programme), which was revoked by UGC after the widespread agitations by students.
