After the death of the prime accused, Ram Singh, in the gang rape and murder case of a parmedical student in a moving bus on 16 December at the national capital, a fast track court has asked jail officials to daily review the security of the remaining four accused and to submit a report of the same ecveryday. The court has also sought an inquiry report from the Tihar jail officials on the alleged suicide by Tuesday.
Ram Singh, who had confessed to the crime, had been facing day-to-day trial in the fast-track court and was to be taken to the court on Monday with another accused in the case.
The remaining four accused - Ram Singh's brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Akshay - who were produced before the court alleged that for the past three days they were being tortured and harassed physically and mentally by the jail officials. V K Anand, counsel of Ram Singh and the accused’s brother Mukesh, demanded an inquiry into the death of Ram Singh, saying there is some foul play behind the death. Anand said he would move the Supreme Court for shifting the trial from Delhi as he feels that the accused are not safe in Delhi.
A P Singh, appearing for Vinay Sharma and Akshay Singh, alleged that Ram Singh was 'killed by jail authorities' and that Tihar is no longer safe for undertrials. 'I want my clients to be released on bail as Tihar is no more safe place for them. They will also be killed,' he said.
