Law Faculty students boycott classes

Students from the Faculty of Law in Delhi University boycotted classes on Friday on allegations that the dean had suspended six guest lecturers in the middle of their semester. The dean has rubbished these allegations and said that only one of the guest lecturers was suspended.

Swetank, a first year student, alleged, ‘Today we boycotted our classes, in protests against the dean’s decision to terminate six guest faculty members in the middle of the semester, which led to the resignation of Vedh Kumari, professor in-charge, Law Center 1. The decision will jeopardise the future of almost 2,000 students, with our courses reaching a critical point and the arrival of the schedule for examinations.’

When sought for an opinion Ashwini Kumar Bansal, dean of Law Faculty said, ‘Vedhkumari, who is professor in-charge of Law Center 1 is asking students to create a ruckus. But after an inquiry by the selection committee, it has been understood that Sumit Dalal, was illegally appointed with Ved Kumari’s help, in Law Center 1. Sumit’s appointment was terminated after orders from the varsity, but we have allowed him to take the remaining five to take classes.’
