“Cameras will be installed in traffic vehicles used for patrolling in the city to capture images of violators who are driving in the wrong lane. Also, CCTV cameras will be installed at various traffic signals and other major junctions in early 2015,” said Muktesh Chander, Special Commissioner of police (traffic).
For the new year, Chander has taken up a resolution to abolish traffic snarls that is mostly caused due to improper lane driving. “The guilty will be challaned as per Motor Vehicle Act,” he added.
“Despite clearing the traffic test to gain license, people in the city do not have a sense of driving. It’s high time to teach them to drive in the lanes meant for them. This will somehow manage the heavy traffic in the city.”
Also, to ensure easy movement of traffic 24X7, Delhi Traffic Police will technologically improvise
itself. Drones will be used to monitor traffic movement, automatic speed detection systems will be installed along with CCTV surveillance.
Apart from making lane driving mandatory, Delhi Traffic Police will also focus on safety of pedestrians. “We will ensure to make or regain atleast one metre footpath for the pedestrians. At some places, the space is available but because of institutional encroachments, the footpaths have been converted into parking lots. These encroachments along will illegal shops, electricity booths, garbage bins will be removed to make one metre wide footpaths for smooth movement of pedestrians,” the new year resolution says.
Though Delhi tops the country in fatal road accidents and in number of pedestrians and cyclists falling preys to such mishaps, Delhi Traffic Police is all set to curb fatal accidents in the near future. In 2015, the national Capital will witness 9 per cent decrease in the fatal road accidents, as compared to the records of previous year.
“We will focus on quality prosecution that will result in lesser road accidents,” Chander said.
