Lalu to teach political science, management to jail inmates

Jailed RJD president Lalu Prasad would teach inmates political science and management at Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Central Jail, where he has been lodged after his conviction in the fodder scam.

Teaching is considered ‘light work’ for which the ex-Bihar chief minister would be paid Rs 25 daily.

Lalu was awarded five-year rigorous imprisonment, which means he will have to do jobs allotted to him in the jail.

‘Due to his age, health and political status, we can not make him do hard work. I will request him to teach the jailed criminals. It would be nice if he teaches political science and management,’ said jail superintendent in charge Virendra Kumar Singh.

Lalu, who has a degree in political science, had delivered lectures in management at Harvard Business School and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, during his stint as the Union railway minister.

Around 3,000 inmates, both convicted and undertrials, are lodged in the central jail. ‘Around 200 inmates are preparing for intermediate examinations, 100 for graduation and 50 for post-graduation,’ said an official.

Jail IG Shailendra Bhushan said a jail official would soon interview Lalu and prepare his history book. ‘According to the book, he would be allotted suitable jobs.’

The jail has a learning centre, where several qualified prisoners teach jail inmates.
