Leaving a fancy life behind with earnings of over a crore annually, Adarsh Shastri (40) — grandson of former Indian prime minister late Lal Bahadur Shastri and the son of Congress leader Anil Shastri — could not hold himself from becoming a part of the ‘parivartan (change)’, which is believed to be taking place across the nation.
Adarsh, marketing head of Apple in India, joined Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday. His official association with the AAP is being much talked about now a days and closely monitored by the Congress leaders who think that it’s a high-profile addition to the AAP cadre.
Downplaying his joining, however, Adarsh said that his decision to join AAP was based on personal conviction. ‘I had a cushy life with a great company. But somehow it did not feel right. I was inspired by Arvind Kejriwal and felt compelled to do more,’ he said.
People across the country, including many Bollywood celebrities appreciated Adarsh’s move, on social networking sites.
It was learnt that he has quit his Apple job in the first week of December. ‘Kejriwal’s confidence has impressed me,’ he said. He reportedly told his father Anil Shastri (a long time Congress leader) that he does not identify with Congress’ culture.
Adarsh is believed to have been discussing and considering the move for the past few months. He recently told his parents about his decision to join the party. Adarsh’s father reportedly asked him to go follow his heart.
Speaking to the Millennium Post Anil Shastri said, ‘None of my children (three) are associated with politics. I think AAP has changed the way Adarsh thinks. Honestly, I wanted him to join Congress, but he is an adult and he has the right to take his own decisions.’
Adarsh, who has a family of four including nine-year-old twin boys, is planning to start a small telecom company to meet his financial needs. His role in the party is yet to be known. However, he is ready to take any responsibility and if required contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
Earlier, in 1989, 1991 and 1996 he had campaigned for his father in Varanasi, Allahabad and Indore.
