Lajpat Nagar murder: Accused held, stolen money recovered

Two days after a 62-year-old woman was found bludgeoned to death at her first floor residence in South-east Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area, Delhi Police on Tuesday morning arrested one of the accused identified as Kamal, said sources. Sources added that Kamal was arrested from his residence in Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh. On Sunday at around 4 pm, 62-year-old Vimla Ahuja was found lying in a pool of blood by her son who came to check on her. Police said that they have recovered the entire Rs 10 lakh that was robbed.

Sources said that: “Working at Ahuja’s shop in Lajpat Nagar Central Market for the last five years, Kamal told his employees that he is going home to Barabanki as his daughter is ill. However, two days before the murder, Kamal came back to Delhi. Kamal was in Delhi few days before the murder. He carried out a recee of the area and noted down the schedule of the old lady.”

“Since he knew the house well and also knew where the cash and jewellery were kept, Kamal straight away entered the house as the main door was open. He allegedly went to the kitchen and hit on Vimla ‘s head with a blunt object and then robbed Rs 10 lakh and some jewellery,” said sources.
Sources further added that “While scanning the CCTV footage of the incident, we identified Kamal. Since the day of the murder, Kamal’s mobile phone was found to be switched off. Through technical surveillance on his mobile phone, we tracked him to Barabanki and arrested him.”
