Labour union demands abolishment of contract labour in power companies

With abolishment of contract labour, Singh added that these companies shall open recruitments to such workers.

Singh, who was the AAP candidate from Shahadra assembly seat, demanded abolition of a Contractual Labour Act 1970.

Citing the clauses of the Act, Singh stressed that in the departments where the nature of work demands permanent employees, there should be no provision of contractual employees. Singh, who lost to BJP’s Jirender Singh Shanty by 23,000, said that he has been fighting for the rights of around 30,000 contractual employees working in the all five power distribution companies in Delhi.

Strongly protesting against the rampant practice of contractual labour, Singh alleged that they are not even given minimum wages for most dangerous duties, which extend to at least 12 hours a day.

‘These workers are compelled to sign their resignation letters at the time of appointment itself’, the letter added. Without any social or economic security, bereft of bare minimum tools, insurance cover, family pension and medical facilities, Singh alleged exploitation  by these companies.
