Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi Tejender Khanna on Wednesday addressed the Delhi Legislative Assembly’s 13th budget session. While he took time to highlight some of the Delhi government’s achievements, he ignored the law and order situation in the capital city as well as the pollution of Yamuna river.
According to Khanna, Delhi is a better city today than it was 15 years ago. He listed Metro, low-floor buses, round the clock electric supply and the increased green cover as features of Delhi life. He pointed out that they did not exist 12 years ago.
‘The success of my government’s financial management is evident by three factors. Firstly, government has been able to set more ambitious tax revenue targets despite the economic slowdown. Secondly, efficient management of the economy resulted in reducing the outstanding debt to 7.89 per cent as a ratio of gross state domestic product, which is the lowest among all the states in the country. And thirdly, the government has presented a debt free budget. My government is committed to provide quality preventive and curative health care services to the citizens of Delhi. Thirty eight hospitals and 886 health institutions provide a total of more than 43,500 beds in the city. There are plans for the expansion of six existing hospitals, and eight hospitals are under various stages of planning,’ reported Khanna.
Khanna also claimed that Delhi State Industry and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) is constructing 40,000 residential flats for the economically weaker section under JNNURM. Of which, he said, 13,820 flats have been completed, and work is in progress for the construction of 25,500 flats.
Leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra said that it was strange that while Delhi has become a ‘rape capital’ and ‘crime capital’ there was no mention of law and order situation.
CM DISMISSES BJP’S CALL FOR SPEAKER’S RESIGNATION
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit dismissed leader of opposition’s call for resignation of speaker of Delhi Legislative Assembly Yoganand Shastri saying such cases have not even been filed. Dikshit said the members of the house strongly condemn the unprecedented behaviour of the V K Malhotra and members of his party for asking for the resignation of speaker without any basis of verification. ‘They have shown great disrespect to the chair of speaker. The members, including myself, express deep anguish and pain over this sort of uncalled for attitude of the leader of opposition,’ said Dikshit.
