Lieutenant-Governor(L-G) Tejendra Khanna has approved nearly 8,000 housing units for the economically weaker sections (EWS) in and around areas such as Narela, Dwarka, Rohini and Siraspur in Delhi during the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) board meeting that was held on Tuesday under his chairmanship. These are expected to be completed by March 2014.
L-G Khanna has asked the land agency to prepare detailed project report with a full-monitoring chart giving targets, time-lines and the dates for the completion of the project.
According to the budget, during 2013-14, a sum of Rs 3,029.41 crore is expected to be received from disposal of land and Rs 2,847.44 crore from the disposal of houses and shops. ‘The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has rapped DDA for failing to construct low cost houses for the urban poor. According to CAG, DDA’s project for construction of 4,740 houses were approved in December 2007 at a cost of Rs 196.o6 crore. DDA had split the project into five parts and awarded four contracts for 4,060 houses at a tendered cost of Rs 176.45 crore. The project was started after 30 months of its approval in June 2010,’ a government official said.
‘Around 3,000 flats are expected to be ready in Narela, Dwarka and Rohini by September this year. These will mainly include housing for the EWS. Besides this, housing projects are also under way in other parts of the city,’ the offical added.
The Union urban minister had directed DDA to construct housing for the EWS and that it should be the primary task of DDA who should aim to provide 1 lakh such houses every year.
