L-G addresses assembly, says Jan Lokpal Bill is a priority

‘We intend to take all steps to end corruption in all government departments. Passing the version of Lokpal Bill, for which Anna Hazareji had to undertake a fast, will be a priority for the government’, he added.

‘The citizen’s of Delhi have overwhelmingly voted for change in the recently concluded assembly elections. They have reposed faith in not only a new approach to governance but also to a new political culture that stressed the need to place the citizen at the centre of our thoughts, actions and policies,’ said Jung.

In his address, Jung promised to bring reforms in governance and said bridging the chasm between the citizens and government would be among its top priorities. Jung said that government will put an end to all symbols of privilege and power that distance the governed from the government. ‘No minister or MLA will use a red beacon on their cars. Special security will be avoided’, he said.

The lieutenant-governor also said that the government will ensure the safety and security of women and girls in the state. In his address, Jung said, ‘Special security cells shall be set up to ensure that women and girls are not harassed. New courts shall be set up and new judges appointed, so as to ensure that all cases involving harassment of women and girls are disposed of in three months’.

On the issue of full statehood, Jung said, ‘It is the intent of my government to actively pursue the issue with the Central Government to grant full statehood to Delhi. This would clearly ensure that multiplicity of authorities is reduced and decisions are expedited’. Talking about labour reforms, he said that the government is also committed to the provision of regular jobs to those currently workings on contracts.
