Lamenting quality of education in government schools, Minister of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha on Thursday said that the feeling of respect that students had for teachers and the feeling of affection that the latter had for their students have vanished.
Speaking at the 56th Foundation Day of the NCERT, Kushwaha said that he had studied in a government school but when he visits the same schools now as a minister, it would be dishonest to say the country has moved ahead in terms of quality of education. “If we look at the country as a whole, we should except that in terms of quality of education especially in government schools, we have not moved forward,” he said.
While emphasising that high quality education should reach people in the villages, Kushwaha asked NCERT officials present to keep the concerns of quality of education in their mind. “We may have opened schools but what is the use of buildings where there is no education,” Kushwaha said, adding that huge challenges lie ahead. He spoke about reducing the burden of bags on children.
