Kumar visits PMO, Bansal skips meet

What can be seen as a clear indicator of the precarious position that the fate of law minister Ashwani Kumar hangs in, is the fact that even when he went to Prime Minister’s office on Thursday, he didn’t meet Manmohan Singh. Juxtaposed with  railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansalwho skipped the cabinet meeting held the same day. Both cabinet minister’s removal has been indicated by party top bosses, after their name appeared in Coalgate and Railgate, said a source.

Kumar, who is under attack over vetting of CBI probe report on coal blocks allocation scam, went to the PMO on Thursday, which trigged speculations of his meeting with Manmohan Singh. But Kumar denied meeting the PM.

Meanwhile, attorney general GE Vahanvati met the Prime Minister and briefed him on Wednesday’s proceedings of the Supreme Court in the coal issue. Kumar was inside South Block, the office of the Prime Minister, for about 30 minutes, fuelling speculations that he had met the PM to discuss and clarify the critical observations made by the Supreme Court over the vetting of CBI report on coal block allocation.

However, when asked if he had met the PM, Kumar said, ‘I did not meet the Prime Minister today.’

It was later known that the Prime Minister was then at Rashtrapati Bhavan for a meeting with President Pranab Mukherjee. Sources said Kumar met officials in the PMO to discuss the situation arising out of the Supreme Court’s observations.

The apex court had made a reference to the law minister’s role in vetting the probe report and asked, ‘does it not subvert the integrity of the investigation if changes are brought in status report on the suggestion of law minister and government officers.’
