Kumar Vishwas faces FIR for his comments on Muharram

The FIR was lodged after a protest by Muslims under the banner of All India Jan Sewa Committee which accused the AAP leader of hurting sentiments of the community with his comments on Muharram.

Superintendent of police (Bareilly city), Rajiv Malhotra, said the FIR was lodged against Vishwas under section 295 of IPC (promoting animosity on the basis of religion and colour) and 66A of the IT Act. ‘We will investigate the matter and do the needful,’ he said.

During a convention of poets in 2005, Vishwas had allegedly joked about Muharram. The AAP leader issued an apology after his alleged remark created a controversy recently after the purported video of the function went viral on the net.

President of All India Jan Sewa Committee Nadeem Qureshi said, ‘An apology is not enough and he should be punished for this. We have seen the video and his comments were very objectionable. It has hurt our feelings.’
