Rakesh Siddaramaiah, elder son of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who was admitted to University Hospital in Brussels died of multi-organ failure on Saturday.
The death was confirmed by the Chief Minister’s office around 4.10 pm. Rakesh, who recently celebrated his 39th birthday, was hospitalised on Sunday evening after he developed severe liver and pancreatic complications. He is survived by his wife and two children.
He had developed hepato-renal syndrome, which is secondary to pancreatitis. Under the care of Intensivist Philippe Jorens, he was on dialysis in the ICU. Doctors were continuously monitoring him to prevent a multi-organ failure.
Sources close to the Chief Minister said the family is likely to leave Belgium with the body on Sunday by a special flight. The Indian Embassy officials are helping the bereaved family with the formalities.
The Chief Minister, accompanied by his Principal Secretary, had gone to Belgium on Thursday. Siddaramaiah’s wife Parvathi and their other son Yathindra are in Belgium.
Sources said Rakesh had pancreatitis after suffering an injury to his pancreas in a nearly fatal accident 15 years ago.
The problem was recurrent with symptoms of severe epigastric pain. This attack in Belgium was severe and acute with significant variations in haematological parameters.
Sources said Rakesh initially visited his son, who stays with his maternal aunt in Germany. Subsequently, he continued his holiday with his friends.
Facebook accounts of Rakesh’s friends, who accompanied him, revealed that they had gone to Tomorrowland, the world’s biggest electronic music festival at the Belgium town of Boom.
