Youth thrashed by local goons for protesting against gambling

A youth was beaten up by local goons after he protested against gambling. The incident occurred in Sulunguri area of New Town on Wednesday night.
The incident had triggered tension in the locality. Police said that the victim, Khokon Haldar, a local resident found that some local youth were gambling and consuming alcohol. Haldar stepped out of his house and protested against the act resulting in an altercation between the youth and the accused. The victim was asked to leave the place and was threatened with dire consequences. As the youth did not leave the place, the accused attacked him. It was alleged that the miscreants hit him on his head with a pistol, as a result of which the victim received serious injuries on his head.
After hearing the screams of the victim, some local residents rushed to his rescue and took the victim to a nearby hospital. The accused had, however, fled the spot before the arrival of the local residents. The local people alleged that the accused often operate gambling racket in the area. They also teased the women but no one dared to raise a voice against them as they are involved in various anti-social activities. The victim's family members lodged a complaint in the New Town police station on the basis of which police started an investigation. They have arrested one person in this connection so far. They are conducting raids at various places to nab the other culprits involved in the incident.
