Youth shot at in Budge Budge over rivalry

Kolkata: A youth was critically injured when a gang of miscreants shot at him from point blank range on Budge Budge Trunk Road, a stone's throw away from the police investigation centre on Thursday night.

The youth, Maidul Islam (32), associated with land-related business, is a resident of Chingripota Gram Panchayat.

He has been admitted to a private hospital in Ekbalpore area in a critical condition.

"We suspect that the shoot out is a result of enmity over the possession over a piece of land. We have collected the CCTV footage of the area and are examining it to identify the miscreants," a senior police official of the district said. According to the police sources, it was around 10.30 pm, when Maidul was travelling towards Budge Budge riding on his motorcycle.

He was chased by a red car that managed to overtake him stopping him his way. Maidul lost his balance and skidded on the road. As he tried to run towards the police investigation centre, the miscreants in the car caught him and dragged him along the road and then shot at him. One of the bullets missed the target but two others hit him on his hand as he fell down on the road writhing in pain.

The car fled from the spot as the onlookers, who were caught by surprise by the loud sound, raised a cry. Police sources informed that Maidul has previous criminal antecedents and had suffered prison term in connection with a murder case.

He was out on bail around a month back. The Budge Budge Police have started a probe on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim's family.
