Youth posing as AGM of SAIL held on fraud charges
Kolkata: Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested one youth from near a five-star hotel on EM Bypass on Saturday on charges of duping many people.
The accused, Shyam Maitra, posed himself as the AGM of SAIL on a marketing business web portal and used to ask customers to buy the products of SAIL. He then asked money from the customers on his account through RTGS for the bought product.
In the course of investigation, police found that Maitra impersonated himself as Bholanath Biswas, AGM, Marketing, SAIL.
A complaint was lodged with the Puducherry police in this regard. It was learnt that M/S Pasupati Engineering of Puducherry had placed an order for 35 MT of steel but the accused informed them that SAIL does not supply less than 100 MT of steel.
Eventually, the victim made a payment of Rs 58,32,000 through RTGS. The case was registered in Puducherry on July 26. The complaint was lodged by Prashant Banshal, the owner of the company. After receiving the complaint, Puducherry police approached the CID for assistance to arrest the culprit. The CID accompanied by a team from Puducherry police carried out an investigation. They came to know that Maitra had been staying in a five-star hotel on EM Bypass. As the CID did not have any details about the accused except his mobile number, a team was placed outside
the hotel.
Finally, the hotel authorities extended their cooperation when he was checking out and he was arrested at around 11.45 am on Saturday. During the interrogation, the accused confessed his guilt. He has been in the business of duping people by various means since 2014, police suspect. The preliminary investigation suggests that the accused, a resident of Sukantapalli in Durgapur, has taken crores of money from various people. Formalities are being done for his transit remand.
