Write-ups on science to sharpen curious minds

Kolkata: With an aim to popularize scientific writings among the students the union Department of Science and Technology (DST)is encouraging young researchers to write lucidly about their own projects. The department will take measures to make some of these articles available in public domain to arouse curiosity about scientific theories and inventions, about the young ones.

"We will be offering prizes ranging from Rs 2 lakh to 10,000 to the best science writing and an expert panel of DSTwill judge the writings," said Asutosh Sharma, secretary, DST at the inauguration of

Vigyan Samagam at Science City. Sharma added that the department wants its young PhD researchers to pen their research activities in a simple manner so that then young generation feel interested in reading.

The department has already brought out a book with 100 such writings last year.

The event was addressed by Union Minister of Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan,who said that the objective of the programme is to make the common people aware of the role of Indian scientists in seven mega science global projects in which India is participating.

The projects are the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research 'Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research' (FAIR), 'India-based Neutrino Observatory' (INO), 'International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor' (ITER) to name a few.

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) , Department of Science and Technology (DST) and National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) under Ministry of Culture joined hands to organise the show that will continue till December 31.

"We have formed seven groups, comprising four to six PhD science researchers

each, which will educate the visitors about the show. We want to popularise science and marvels among the young generation," said Subhabrata Chaudhuri , director of Science City, Kolkata.
