Woman's body found in canal

Mystery shrouds the death of an unidentified woman whose body was found in a canal at Najirganj in Howrah on Sunday morning.
Police said that local people saw the body when they came out of their houses for morning and they promptly informed the police. The body was sent for an autopsy and police initiated a probe.

Police suspect that the woman was killed somewhere and later, her body was dumped in the canal. The miscreants chose the area to dump the body as the place was deserted and poorly illuminated.

There were several injury marks all over her body which suggest that she had tried to restrict the miscreants when they attempted to kill her.

The police contacted all other police stations situated close to Najirganj to find out if any complaint of a missing woman was lodged. But they found nothing as such that made the task of identification of the woman even tougher.

In another similar incident at Haldia in East Midnapore, the body of a 25-year-old youth was found beside National Highway 41 on Sunday morning.

Police are, however, yet to ascertain whether it is a case of murder or an accident as his head was found smashed with something heavy. The victim seems to be the helper of a truck from some neighbouring state. A police officer said it seemed that the driver of the truck in which he was helper had pushed him off the vehicle following some altercation and ran over him. The body was sent for an autopsy.

The police were going through footages of surveillance cameras to ascertain whether it is an accident or a murder.
