Woman jumps off 5-storey building with 3-year-old, mother; baby unhurt

Kolkata: A woman carrying a 3-year-old child jumped off the roof of a five-storey building at Posta along with her 62-year-old mother after blindfolding themselves on Wednesday evening. Locals immediately removed the injured three to Calcutta Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared the aged woman brought dead.

According to the police, locals on Burtolla street heard a noise of something falling on the ground on Wednesday around 7 pm. When some of the locals went to check, they saw two women identified as Indira Mohata (30) and Sohini Devi Taparia (62) lying in a pool of blood. A child was also found crying on the ground near them.

They were rushed to the hospital where Taparia was declared brought dead. Mohata is admitted to the ICU in a critical condition. Surprisingly, the 3-year-old child remained unhurt. Though no injury could be found on the body, the child has been kept under observation.

Sources informed that Indira was married to one Amit Mohata of Jamunalal Bajaj street, who owns a garment business there.

Since past one-and-a-half-year, their divorce case was going on in

a city court. Indira was staying with her parents at 10 Burtolla Street. The locals informed that Taparia had another son who is physically challenged.

They were going through deep mental stress over family problems and tried to commit suicide due to depression, the locals maintained. On Wednesday, Joint Commissioner (crime) Praveen Tripathi visited the incident spot and discussed about the investigation with Deputy Commissioner (central) Subhankar Sinha Sarkar and the officers of Posta police Station.

Later, he said: "Probe is on. It is hard to say whether it is accidental or suicidal before any detailed investigation." The sleuths are interrogating the family members of Taparia and Amit to find if there is any foul play.
