Woman held for killing 8-yr-old brother-in-law

Kolkata: In a tragic incident in Kolkata's Port area, an eight-year-old boy was allegedly killed by his sister-in-law.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the crime is an outcome of the grudge the woman had against him because she felt that her in-laws loved the victim more than her husband.

Police said the victim, Riju Das, was found in an unconscious state inside a plastic drum full of water.

The drum was inside the toilet of his residence on Paharpur Road at Metiabruz and the incident took place

on June 29.

He used get inside the drum for bathing everyday.

Hence, initially, everyone thought that he accidentally drowned while taking a bath and there was no foul play behind the incident.

He was found in an unconscious state and immediately taken to a private hospital at Ekbalpore where he was declared brought dead.

His body was sent for an autopsy. Police came to know that the victim's sister-in-law, Priyanka Das (19) kept enquiring about the findings of the autopsy report in an unusual manner.

It led to suspicion. But on Monday night, the woman finally confessed to her husband, Subrata Das, that she had killed the eight-year-old

Riju.

Further investigation revealed that it was the woman, who put the lid on the drum and it eventually resulted in the death of the child.

Police found out that she felt that her father-in-law and mother-in-law used love the victim more than her husband and it led to the crime.

Soon after the matter came to light, Subrata lodged a complaint with Metiabruz police station and the woman was detained.

The police questioned her and she was shown arrested on Tuesday evening. She will be produced before a city court on Wednesday.

A police officer said the victim's mother was searching for the boy as she was not been able to find him for a long time after he went to take a bath.

Priyanka has also joined her mother-in-law to search Riju. Finally, they checked the drum and found him inside.

It was Priyanka, who had helped her mother-in-law bring Riju's body out of the drum.

Investigating officers visited the spot and collected samples for tests. The police have also taken statements of Subrata and other members of the family.

According to a psychologist, the woman failed to conceal the crime as she was feeling guilty after seeing the pathetic condition of her in-law's following the boy's death.
